Recommendation to the Traffic Engineering Advisory Group:

That Council advertise a trial of a car park style speed humps on each approach to the pedestrian crossing in South Street, Granville, immediately north of Mary Street.

Comments

The Police representative advised that many near misses have been observed. Pedestrians often do not check whether motorists have stopped to let them cross. It is busy in terms of the volume of pedestrians and cars. It is also visually crowded with many signs and street furniture. Sharp breaking by motorists for pedestrian may have caused some rear end accidents. The Police representative also noted that this is a low speed environment.

The representative for RMS raised concerns in relation to installation of a car park style speed hump in a road environment. It was noted by the Committee that this style of car park are in Betty Cuthbert Avenue, Ermington and several lanes in Parramatta. The advantages of car park style speed humps in regards to the low cost and easy implementation as a trial were also noted.

The RMS representative advised that other speed hump profiles are available that may be more suitable.

It was considered  that the matter be deferred to provide the Committee with an opportunity to inspect the car park style speed humps in Betty Cuthbert Avenue, Ermington.

Recommendation from the Traffic Engineering Advisory Group:

1.    That Council organise a site meeting with RMS and Rosehill Police LAC at Betty Cuthbert Avenue, Ermington to view the recently installed car park style speed humps and a report be brought back to the next Traffic and Advisory Group meeting recommending appropriate treatment for South Street, Granville.

2.    That Council pursue discussion with RMS regarding installation of a ‘40km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area’ restriction in South Street, Granville.
