Comments

The representative for Tony Issa, MP informed the Committee that the local community is concerned about the safety of school children crossing Clyde Street and therefore requested the Committee, on behalf of the local community and MP for Granville, to approve installation of a pedestrian crossing in Clyde Street, South Granville.

The representative for RMS advised the Committee of the warrants required (normal and special) for installation of a pedestrian crossing.  A Pedestrian Crossing that does not meet the warrants may provide pedestrians with a false sense of security and compromises their safety. The representative advised that there is a range of treatments available, such as pedestrian refuge islands and signalised crossings and that TEAG should investigate which is the most suitable option.

Clr Bide supported the request for a pedestrian crossing and informed the Committee that the local community does not feel comfortable in crossing Clyde Street and this leads to low pedestrian volumes.

Rosehill Police expressed concern about speed and supported Clr Bide’s comments regarding pedestrians currently not crossing Clyde Street due to the traffic. However, the representative did not support the pedestrian crossing due to the collision history revealing 2 (out of 4) pedestrian accidents occurred at the 2 existing pedestrian crossings in Clyde Street in the 5-year period ( Wellington Road to Mons Street).

The representative for RMS informed the Committee that a detailed site analysis should be undertaken to provide information on the pedestrian catchment and pedestrian travel patterns in the area.

The representative for Tony Issa, MP supported the suggestion that residents do not cross Clyde Street at this location due to the high volumes of traffic.

Councillor Wilson supported the community’s desire to have a pedestrian crossing, but noted that pedestrian crossings can provide a false sense of safety.

Recommendation from the Traffic Engineering Advisory Group:

The Police and RMS representatives voted:

That traffic and pedestrian counts be undertaken in Clyde Street, South Granville, between Boronia Street and Byrnes Street in March 2012 and a detailed site analysis be provided to TEAG.

Councillor Bide and Tony Issa, MP voted:

That a pedestrian crossing be installed in Clyde Street between Boronia Street and Byrnes Street, South Granville.
