1. Executive Summary
Background
This report presents the
results of the Parramatta City Council Smoking and Outdoor Dining survey that
Ekas Market Research was commissioned by Council to conduct on Australia Day
2011.
The survey sought to gain
an understanding of the views of attendees at Council’s Australia Day event in
A total of 359 intercept
surveys were conducted between 8:00am and 12:00pm.
The main findings of the
survey are summarised below.
Main Messages
· There was strong support
for a ban on smoking in alfresco/outdoor dining areas within the Parramatta LGA
- Strongly support (72%)
- Somewhat support (10%)
- Neither oppose or support (8%)
- Somewhat Oppose (5%)
- Strongly Oppose (5%)
· The strongest support for a
ban on smoking in alfresco/outdoor dining areas came from people who do not currently smoke
- I smoke daily
(34.4%)
- I smoke occasionally
(50.1%)
- I don't smoke now
but I used to (79.7%)
- I've tried it a few
times but never smoked regularly (88.9%)
- I've never smoked
(91.1%)
· Over a third (34.4%) of
people who smoke daily support a ban on smoking in alfresco/outdoor dining
areas
· Males are more likely to strongly
support a ban than females
· People living within the
local area are more likely to strongly support a ban than people living outside
the local area

Analysis The
above graph provides the breakdown of the sex of respondents that
participated in the Parramatta Smoking and Outdoor Dining Survey. The
proportion of males to females surveyed on the day was split almost 50/50.
Males were slightly more likely to indicate they would “strongly support” a
ban on smoking in alfresco/outdoor dining areas than females (75.3% compared
to 68.2%). |

Analysis The
above graph provides the breakdown of the age of respondents. The majority of
people surveyed were aged 26-40 (54%) followed by those aged 41-55 (25%).
There was a smaller proportion of young people aged 16-18 surveyed and older
people aged 70+. |

Analysis The
above graph provides a breakdown of the proportion of local residents compared
to those who live outside the local area. People living within the Parramatta
LGA were slightly more likely to “strongly support” a ban on smoking in outdoor
dining areas than people living outside the area (73.2% compared to 70.1%). |

above graph provides a breakdown of the living situation of respondents. The
majority of respondents (33%) were ratepayers, followed by renters (23%).
Ratepayers were slightly more likely to “strongly support” a ban on smoking
in outdoor dining areas than people who are renting (75.6% compared to
70.7%). |

who don’t currently smoke
accounted for 97.6% of those who “strongly supported” a ban on smoking in
outdoor dining areas, while people who do
currently smoke accounted for 70.6% of people who would “strongly oppose” such
a ban. Just over a third (34.4%) of people who smoke daily either “somewhat
support” or “strongly support” a ban on smoking in outdoor dining areas. |
