PURPOSE:
The purpose of this Lord Mayor Minute is to congratulate Parramatta Riverside Theatres for being recognised as Performing Arts Centre of the Year at the prestigious PAC Australia Impact Awards. The Minute also notes the success of the 2023 Spot On Children’s Festival, held at the Riverside Theatre and PHIVE.

(b) That Council congratulate City of Parramatta staff at the Riverside Theatres for being recognised for excellence in performing arts leadership and innovation.
(c) That Council note the success of the 2023 Spot On Festival, held over nine days at the Riverside Theatre and PHIVE.
BACKGROUND
1. The PAC Australia Impact Awards recognise excellence in performing arts leadership, new thinking and best practice, with a focus on lasting impact on communities.
2. In August the City of Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres were named Performing Arts Centre of the Year at the 2023 PAC Australia Impact Awards. The award recognises the work of the Riverside Theatre and National Theatre of Parramatta in fostering a diverse and vibrant local urban culture.
3. The award committee singled out the Riverside’s commitment to programming and delivering work of artistic excellence that reflects the local community. It pointed to the strong producing and commercial partnerships forged by the Riverside over the past year, which have helped it to rebound from the impacts of the pandemic. This year the Riverside has had the most successful programming and attendance since 2018, including breaking the 35-year box office record for a single season.
4. The Award also recognised Riverside’s producing company, the National Theatre of Parramatta, which continues to punch above its weight. The company sets the standard for inclusion, talent cultivation and community engagement for the people of Western Sydney including young, LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC artists and audiences.
5. Council congratulates City of Parramatta staff at the Riverside Theatres for being recognised as the premier performing arts centre in the country and for again putting Parramatta in the national arts spotlight.
6. Riverside’s Spot On Children’s Festival encourages children to explore the world of the arts, delve into tales of magical creatures and places near and far and experience the power of live performance and dynamic storytelling.
7. In 2023, the Festival ran over nine days from 26 September – 4 October, including everything from musical performances to physical comedy and circus acts. The success of the Festival ensures the Riverside remains the home of the best children’s entertainment and activities in Western Sydney.

REPORT OF Lord Mayor Councillor Pierre Esber
CSP THEME: Welcoming

PURPOSE: The purpose of this Lord Mayor Minute is to acknowledge the death of Rod Hetherington, and express Council’s sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Recommendation:
(a) That Council acknowledge the death of Mr Roderick (Rod) George Hetherington, Parramatta and NSW Touch Association legend, inaugural Aileen May medalist and valued community member.
(b) That Council expresses its sincere condolences to Rod Hetherington’s family and friends at this sad time.
BACKGROUND
1. Mr Roderick George Hetherington, Parramatta and NSW Touch Association legend, inaugural Aileen May medalist and valued community member, died on 28 September 2023 after a determined battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Pam, two children Jenna and Ricky, and grandchildren Felicity, Allira and Lucy. On behalf of Council, I express our sincere condolences to Rod Hetherington’s family and friends at this sad time.
2. Rod Hetherington was a stalwart supporter of the Parramatta Touch Eels Football Association and NRL Touch Football NSW, a genuine all-rounder who served as a player, coach, referee and administrator. He began his sporting career at the South Sydney Touch Association and ended having served as Eels President for 15 years, with over 30 years’ committee service.
3. NSW Touch Association Chairman Mark Hearnden reflected on Rod’s significant contributions to the sport: “Today is a very sad day for our Touch Football community. Rod Hetherington was a good mate to many and one of the great leaders in our sport. Outspoken and tenacious, you knew where Rod stood on most issues. When he joined the Board of the NSWTA 4 years ago, his passion was obvious, as was his enthusiasm to contribute to the success of Touch Football in NSW. Rod’s astute financial leadership was critical to the ongoing viability of our organisation during the heights of the COVID-19 outbreak. This work was over and above what he was doing at the park with Parramatta Touch Association and his contribution there was recently recognised when Rod was awarded the 2022 Aileen May Medal for NSWTA Affiliate President of the Year, although Rod credited Pam for this success as he would.” Mr Hetherington also received the NSWTA Blues award in 2014, and guided Parramatta to their only Scorpions Affiliate of the Year in 2010.
4. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday 10 October 2023 in the South Chapel of Rookwood Crematorium, East Street Lidcombe at 1.30pm. The family have asked current Parramatta players to wear their club polo shirts and the service will be livestreamed.
