REPORT OF Lord Mayor, Councillor Donna Davis
CSP THEME: FAIR
workshop/briefing date: Nil
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this Lord Mayoral Minute is to seek Council support for a donation to the Cancer Council’s 2022 Daffodil Day fundraising initiative.
Recommendation:
(a) That Council donate $2,000 to the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day Appeal to support life-saving cancer research;
(b) That the Lord Mayor write to the Cancer Council to acknowledge their important work and inform them of Council’s donation; and
(c) Further, that Council note the City of Parramatta will proactively encourage staff and the community to support the fundraising initiative through internal communications and Council’s social media channels.
BACKGROUND
1. Nearly 150,000 Australians are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it is estimated 1 in 2 Australians will be affected by cancer in their lives. The Cancer Council is the largest non-government funder of cancer research in Australia and the only charity that works across every area of every cancer, from research to prevention and support.
2. In 2021, the Daffodil Day Appeal raised almost $1.5 million for life-saving cancer research. Research can reduce the impact of cancer in many ways, from early detection to revolutionary treatment options.
3. The Daffodil Day Appeal is Cancer Council’s most iconic and much-loved fundraising campaign. Daffodil Day falls on Thursday 25 August in 2022, with all funds raised going towards life-saving cancer research. The Cancer Council NSW will set up a stall in Parramatta Square on Daffodil Day.
4. It is estimated that investment in research by organisations like the Cancer Council is helping to increase cancer survival rates to 69% today.
5. The Cancer Council funds more cancer research than any other non-government organisation in Australia. Each year almost $60 million is directed into research projects in universities, hospitals, research institutions and at the Cancer Council itself.
6. The community can visit https://www.daffodilday.com.au/ to find out more about Daffodil Day and how it helps fund the work of our brightest and best cancer researchers.
7. This minute proposes a donation of $2,000 to the Daffodil Day fundraising initiative, to show support for the Cancer Council and the incredible work they do saving lives and protecting the health of our community.
8. Council will also encourage further support for the cause through internal communications to Council staff and public facing social media posts.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATION FOR COUNCIL
9. This Lord Mayoral Minute proposes a donation of $2,000 be made to the 2022 Daffodil Day fundraising initiative to support the work of the Cancer Council who fund world-leading cancer research and prevention initiatives.
10. This donation can be met from the existing 2022/23 Lord Mayor and Council Support donations budget (126000 – 646203).

BACKGROUND
1. Professor Peter Shergold AC will retire in December after 12 years of exemplary service as Chancellor of Western Sydney University (WSU). During his time at WSU, Professor Shergold has been instrumental in shaping the organisation to be a catalyst for western Sydney’s economic advancement and social prosperity. Under his leadership, WSU has become a prominent voice at a local, national and international level for equity, social justice and social inclusion. His advocacy has ensured the students and communities of western Sydney have equal access to world-leading education.
2. Professor Shergold has made a substantial contribution to Sydney and its communities through his passionate advocacy for the transformational power of higher education. He has nurtured the University’s distinctive identity and played a leading role in establishing it as a world-leading institution, placed in the top 2% of universities in the world.
3. In December 2021, Professor Shergold announced his intention to resign from the role of Chancellor of WSU at the completion of his term on 31 December 2022. Professor Shergold’s career has spanned academia and the public service, including as Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet from 2003-2008. His work has covered many notable areas of national policy development, including as Convener of the University Chancellor’s Council (2016-2018), Coordinator General of Refugee Resettlement in NSW, and working with David Gonski AC on a Review of the NSW vocational education and training sector.

This includes as Chair of the Western Parkland City Authority, Non-Executive Director of Wesfarmers Limited, Patron of Mental Health Australia and Co-Patron of Pride in Diversity.
