REPORT OF            Lord Mayor, Councillor Bob Dwyer

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this Lord Mayor Minute is to note that October 2020 is the 200th anniversary of Catholic Education in Parramatta, and congratulate the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta on this milestone.

Recommendation:

(a)    That Council note the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta is currently celebrating 200 years of catholic education in Parramatta and Australia, with the first Catholic School opened in Parramatta in October 1820.

(b)    That Council write to the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta, and the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta, to congratulate them on this significant milestone and their contributions to education in Parramatta and Australia.

(c)    That Council note the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta is celebrating this milestone with an online experience, including an interactive timeline, spotlight videos, photos and stories.

(d)    Further, that Council note Council officers provided advice and research assistance for this online program, and have shared their own research articles through Council’s Parramatta History and Heritage website to recognise this milestone.

BACKGROUND

1.     In October 1820, thirty two years after the First Fleet arrived, Father John Therry opened the first Roman Catholic School in the colony, under the direction of Mr George Marley.

2.     The school, which historians believe was in Hunter Street, Parramatta, taught 31 students. By 1833, there were 10 Catholic schools in the colony.

3.     The Diocese of Parramatta continues to have some of the oldest schools in Australia. St Patrick’s at Parramatta and Parramatta Marist College both have links to this very first Catholic school in the colony.

4.     There are now more than 1,750 Catholic schools nationally, educating some 765,000 students - this is one in five Australian students.

5.     The Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta, through the website https://200years.parra.catholic.edu.au/home, have developed an online program to celebrate the bicentenary of Catholic education in Australia. They are also delivering activities to recognise this milestone, as well as using this occasion to motivate and stimulate student learning.

6.     Council officers have also released research articles and photos recognising this milestone, available through our Parramatta History and Heritage website, https://historyandheritage.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/

7.     A Lord Mayor Minute tabled by Cr Andrew Wilson on 9 September 2019 also noted the anniversary would take place in 2020, and that discussions had commenced with Council on how the Diocese could recognise the occasion.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATION FOR COUNCIL

8.     There are no new financial implications for Council as a result of this Lord Mayor Minute.

MINUTE OF THE LORD MAYOR

REPORT OF            Lord Mayor, Councillor Bob Dwyer

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this Lord Mayor Minute is to congratulate Rydalmere Lions Football Club’s First Grade team on being crowned NSW NPL 3 Premiers.

Recommendation:

(a)    That Council congratulate the Rydalmere Lions Football Club’s First Grade team on being crowned NSW NPL 3 Premiers following a win over Bankstown City Lions on Saturday, 10 October 2020.

(b)    Further, that Council write to the President of Rydalmere Lions FC congratulating the players, coaching and support staff on this win and the Club’s continued contribution to the game and player development in the City of Parramatta.

BACKGROUND

1.     On Saturday, 10 October 2020, the Rydalmere Lions Football Club’s First Grade team defeated the Bankstown City Lions 1 - 0 to be crowned the NSW NPL 3 Premiers.

2.     Their successful campaign to the championship is to be celebrated following the difficulties posed by the Covid-19 postponement earlier in the year. However, the team finished the rebooted season not only as Champions, but 2020 Minor Premiers.

3.     Council congratulates Rydalmere Lions FC, their first grade players, coaching and support staff, on their win and form throughout the season.

4.     Their triumph this season on the new state-of-the-art synthetic sports field at Rydalmere Park has been fantastic to see.

5.     These improvements to the northern sporting field marked completion of stage one of the ground’s multi-million-dollar overhaul which will provide more access to high quality sporting facilities, allowing more opportunities for our local teams to compete at the highest levels.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATION FOR COUNCIL

6.     There are no new financial implications for Council as a result of this Lord Mayor Minute.
