2 March 2009

Dear Minister

Freight trains crossing Parramatta Road, Granville during peak times

Councilís meeting of 23 February 2009 resolved to write to the Ministry of Transport regarding freight trains that cross Parramatta Road, Granville during peak times.

Freight trains use the Parramatta Road level crossing in Granville throughout the day and night to access the freight facilities in Camellia. However there is a half-kilometre long freight train that uses the Parramatta Road level crossing in the morning peak and evening peak. All freight trains using the level crossing delay road traffic but during peak commuter times the impact on road congestion is unacceptable. The impact often lingers for the remainder of the peak period particularly in the evening.Parramatta Road in Granville already suffers excessive levels of traffic congestion due to toll avoidance on the M4 at Silverwater and lack of access ramps to the M4 between Woodville Road and James Ruse Drive.

Parramatta City Council seeks your assurance that freight train movements across Parramatta Road during the morning and afternoon peak will cease and the current two freight train movements will be re-scheduled to occur after the peak periods to reduce the impact on delaying road traffic and the congestion it creates.

I look forward to your response. In the meantime if you have any questions or for further information, please contact Neile Robinson, Place Manager on 9806 5516.

Yours sincerely

Councillor Tony Issa OAM
